The Cheap-Ass Guide to Getting Fit

Pictures, I think, sometimes say it so much better than words.

The Weighted Vest

(Bonus points, of course, if grain-guzzling cookbooks make up the weight.)

The Standing Desk

The Pullup Bar

The Bench Press/Squat Rack/Everything Else

The Dip Machine

The Tricep Machine

The Treadmill

And The Punchline

You don’t need stuff.

Call it a symptom of the modern fitness industry, then, that we associate purchases with progress: monthly installments for a gym membership, hundred of coins at a time for home exercise machines, and supplements, protein shakes, and glossy magazines out the wazoo.

Here’s the punchline: you have everything you already need.

You have a body. You have a brain. The latter, unsurprisingly, helps sculpt the former, and the entry cost is as simple as can be: a little creativity, a little sweat, and a whole lot of determination to drop the weight.

You have all the equipment you need. What are you waiting for?

Haha @ the standing desk! Just curious, what are your thoughts on a standing desk? Do you think they help keep you fit?

  2. Vic Magary says:

    Love the standing desk!

I’ve been telling people for years that the only piece of equipment that you need is something sturdy to do pull ups with – whether that be a tree branch or a park swingset or (if you so choose) a commercial pull up bar.

Any other piece of fitness equipment is either a luxury or specific for goals that exceed the common standard of good health and fitness.

Completely agreed, Vic. Traveling around, the only piece of equipment I find myself sorely missing is a pull up bar — but it’s a problem easily solved with a little ingenuity and a sturdy enough branch. :)

Awesome dude. But, I do want a kettlebell…

Excellent! I’ve been telling people exactly that for years. You can get into amazing shape without ever touching a weight or setting foot in a gym. Plus you save tons of money and actually get outside!

  7. Jenni says:

Thank you for this reminder! Too often I get caught up in the “if only I had…” cycle. I have everything I need to get fit. Everything.
    Again, many thanks!
